Established as a trading post in 1826 and chartered in 1837, Montgomery is one of the oldest towns in Texas and the birthplace of the Texas Lone Star Flag. Today, visitors travel to Montgomery to view the Historic Downtown District and take advantage of the recreational opportunities of Sam Houston National Forest. Montgomery is positioned on the forest's southwestern edge, affording easy access to camping, boating and hiking hotspots. The city's Historic Downtown District showcases a collection of 19th and early 20th-century buildings, including a chapel and the old general store. Many historic buildings now house restaurants, shops and antique stores. The N.H. Davis Pioneer Complex and Museum, located in an 1831 log cabin, displays a number of items from Montgomery County's past. Golf enthusiasts enjoy several courses located nearby, including two 27-hole facilities. Visit Lake Conroe and travel back to Victorian times on the Southern Empress Cruises, featuring Sunday brunches and evening dinners and dances.
